Anyone who has felt bad breath knows how it can hit one’s confidence. Bad breath is not necessarily caused by not taking care of basic oral hygiene, but also certain medical conditions, gum diseases, smoking and eating foods with strong odors. It can be caused due to food stuck or bacteria in the mouth which can be on the tongue or in between the teeth. It isn’t a pushing medical problem but considering that close to 25% population are distressed due to it, some more attention may do it well.

Bad breath problems can mostly be solved by regularly brushing your teeth and flossing every day unless the problem is chronic. In that case it needs professional attention. Here are a few home remedies which can help prevent bad breath:

  • Plenty of water – Now where have you heard about the benefits of having plenty of water before? Oh yes, everywhere! Water helps with so many diseases, ailments and skin problems. Similarly, it helps with bad breath also. A dry mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria. Water helps wash it out. Make sure you gargle if your mouth is too dry before drinking water.

Home Remedies For Preventing Bad Breath

  • Parsley – After you have spent a few comfortable hours in a restaurant having your favorite meal then call for a sprig of parsley to chew on. It fights the accumulated germs and deodorizes your breath instantly.
  • Orange peel – This is a good mouth freshener. You can chew on it so that the citric acid is released and your salivary glands are stimulated. It has a strong fragrance which helps fight bad breath.
  • A spoon scraper – When outside but want to use a home remedy for bad breath then use a spoon to scrap your tongue off excess food and grime left back after a meal.
  • Spices – Everything from cloves, cinnamon, dill, cardamom, fennel and anise seed help with bad breath. You can visit any herbal shop which may be able to offer a mouth freshener using these spices.
  • Make at home breath fresheners – A mix of tea-tree oil with mint is an excellent breath freshener. Just a few drops in your mouth can make a world of a difference.
  • Fenugreek – Tea made of boiling one teaspoon fenugreek with water and then strained out is effective at killing catarrhal infections which causes bad breath.
  • Lemon – Similar to orange, lemon has citric acid which helps prevent the growth of bacteria. It might be harder to have it by itself, so some lemon juice squeezed in a cup of water can be used to rinse the mouth.
